Here is a great example of a Counterfeit Detector Note. These notes were made available to vendors during colonial times to help them determine the authenticity of notes passing in commerce. It was printed on blue paper so it could not be falsely signed, numbered and then circulated as real currency.

May 1786 5 Shillings Jonathan Hazard

N. Knight

7771 Ch New $225.00
This bright and attractive note has a bit of history behind it. The May, June and Aug 1786 Acts allowed the legal tender provisions to be enforced by the courts using summary judgments rather than by jury trials. In the subsequent lawsuit of Trevett v. Weeden, it was ruled that the law was invalid and from that point forward the common law principle of trial by jury was a fundamental right of all United States citizens.

James Wray

1332 PCGS XF 40 $475.00
This thick paper example with printed date carries the State insignia and two signatures. Eric Newman writes of this series, "A two letter control system in the upper left hand corner was introduced and constitutes the first use in America of series designations in combination with numbering of paper money. The date was typeset and inserted into the cast cuts of the engraved text."
